You may have the engagement ring, but while you’re planning your big day, you’ll need to pick out the rings you will place on one another’s fingers. These rings will stay on your fingers for the rest of your lives, so this is an important decision to make with your future husband or wife. If you’re thinking about choosing your wedding rings, take a look at our handy guide to help you pick ones that will love.

Choosing the Metal

One of the first choices you will have to make about your wedding ring is which precious metal you opt for. There are a few different metals that you could choose, but if you have an engagement ring, it’s best to pick a wedding band of the same metal so they match. The most popular choices for precious metal are:

  • Platinum – this is an incredibly hard-wearing metal so is perfect for a wedding ring that will be worn every day for a lifetime. Having a silver colour, platinum is a popular choice for couples.
  • White Gold – this is a popular choice for bridal jewellery and is made from a mixture of yellow gold and a white metal alloy.
  • Yellow Gold – traditionally, yellow gold is the most popular metal for wedding rings as it is a tough metal which is still associated with luxury and opulence.
  • Rose Gold – made from mixing yellow gold and copper, this metal is becoming increasingly popular.
  • Titanium – with a dark grey hue, titanium is incredibly durable yet lightweight, making it a particularly wearable metal.
  • Palladium – this modern material is similar to platinum but is a more affordable option, providing many of the benefits of platinum without the same price tag.

Choosing the Shape

Wedding rings come in a number of different shapes, offering a different look for different styles. These shapes include:

  • Court – this ring shape features a curved shape on both the inside and the outside of the ring which means that it is a particularly comfortable fit.
  • D Shape – as the name suggests, this ring shape resembles the letter ‘D’, with a flat edge on the inside and a curved shape on the outside.
  • Flat – this ring shape flattens the metal with no curving on the inside or outside, giving it a modern look.
  • Flat Court – this shape is effectively the reverse of a D shape ring as it is domed on the inside but flat on the outside, maintaining the modern look but ensuring that it is particularly comfortable for the wearer.

Choosing the Style

When it comes to choosing the wedding ring style, this is where you can really opt for something that represents your personality. We spoke to jewellers, H. Hogarth, who said,

“Traditionally, wedding rings were simple metal bands which represented the eternal love of the couple. These days, you can find countless different styles for your wedding band which may be more appropriate for your personal style.”

These ring styles can feature precious stones, patterns, metal mixes and unusual shapes. Perhaps you want a band which is set with diamonds, or you want a ring which features white and yellow gold.

There are so many different styles, shapes and metals to choose from when it comes to picking your wedding rings. This is a great opportunity to show off your personality and pick a ring that you will love wearing for the rest of your life.
